- The insertion of an IUD usually involves two appointments, the first of which is for choosing the right contraceptive method and identifying any risk factors. This appointment includes the required tests such as cytology (Pap test) if it has not been performed within the last two years; it also includes screening for certain STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea as well as checking for contraindications. The second appointment usually takes place during menstruation in order to allow the IUD to be inserted.
